The SS America represented the resurgence of the US Merchant Marine in the late 1930's.The first true US Lines built flagship, SS America lived a full and storied life that spanned more than 50 years. The British Liner Athenia was torpedoed by a German u-boat only hours after the the American flagship was launched. The war in Europe had begun and this liner would soon see troops on her decks instead of passengers.
