The SS St. Paul/ St. Louis were identical sisters built at the William Cramp & Sons shipyard in Philadelphia, PA. The two vessels were built as complimentary vessels to the newly purchased SS New York and SS Paris of the American Line. The transfer of the two former Innman Line speed queens to the US flag required the newly formed American Line to build two US hulls. The Paul and Louis were the largest ships constructed by Americans at that time. Their design and seakeeping qualities were of the highest quality. Their speed was just below that of their Cunard rivals the SS Campania and SS Lucania. Many races were performed in these early days of steamships without wireless. The Captain of a fast steamer during this era was considered almost godlike until their vessel came into bad fortune. While racing the Campania the St. Paul went aground on the beach off East Branch, NJ. Both ships had lost their way when fog set in. Luckily the Captains reduced speed. Only the St. Paul refused to anchor and being 15 miles off course she easily settled onto the shore. The passengers were not aware of their predicament until morning. (to be continued) Print size is 11x17 on glossy #80 Strathmore stock. Edition is limited to 500 pieces.
