The SS Canberra was built by Messrs. Harland & Wolff of Belfast, Northern ireland for P&O Line. With a GRT of 45,270 the Canberra was the largest turbo electric liner of her time. Her powerplant produced 85,000 SHP enabling the vessel to cruise at a speed of 27.5 knots. Launched on March 16, 1960 and christened by Dame Pattie Menzies wife of the Prime Minister of Australia, the Canberra was designed for cruising. Her fully air conditioned 15 decks could accomodate 2,238 passengers and a crew of 961. A total of 34,530 Sq. Ft. was reserved for 1st Class and 44,470 for Tourist Class. There were three swimming pools for passengers and two restaurants. The majority of the cabins were designed with baths and showers included. Weight was reduced using aluminum for the construction of her uppermost 9 decks and signal mast. The life boats were installed 4 decks lower than normal and inboard to free the upper levels for passengers. Canberra was fitted with a bulbous bow, a bow thruster and two sets of stabilizers forward and aft of amidships.Length OA 818 Ft. 3 in., Beam 102 Ft., Draft 32 Ft. 6 In. In 1982 during the Falklands campaign Canberra was requisitioned for trooping duties and hospital ship. Dubbed the "Great White Wale" by the soldiers she came through the war unharmed.
