The Great Eastern depicted heading into the storm which would put her owners into a third bankruptcy. A great liner before her time the huge vessel's size would not be exceeded for many decades. Designed by the noted engineer Isambard Kingdom Brunel who had already outdone himself twice with the SS Great Western and the SS Great Britain. Bigger was his trademark.
